IMRaD organizes a research paper around the logic of inquiry: why the study was needed, how it was conducted, what it found, and what those findings mean. This guide helps writers keep those four parts aligned.

What to apply
Introduction: establish the need
The introduction should lead the reader from the research problem to one precise objective, question, or hypothesis.
- Define the problem, population, or phenomenon and explain why it matters.
- Synthesize only the prior evidence needed to identify the unresolved gap.
- End with an objective that can be traced through the methods, results, and conclusion.
Methods: make the work inspectable
Methods should contain enough detail to evaluate bias, understand analytical decisions, and reproduce the work where possible.
- State the design, setting, dates, sampling, eligibility, variables, and procedures.
- Explain sample-size reasoning, missing-data handling, sensitivity analyses, and software.
- Document ethics, consent, registration, data access, and protocol deviations as applicable.
Results: report before interpreting
Results provide a factual account of the completed analysis in the same order established in the methods.
- Show participant or observation flow, exclusions, and the final analytical sample.
- Report effect estimates with uncertainty, denominators, and units rather than p-values alone.
- Use tables and figures to add information instead of duplicating every value in prose.
Discussion: explain what the findings mean
The discussion interprets magnitude, precision, limitations, and practical meaning without overstating certainty.
- Relate the principal finding directly to the stated objective.
- Compare the result with prior evidence and distinguish evidence from inference.
- Close with proportionate implications and the next useful research or practice step.
Before you finish
A short quality review
- Every objective has a matching method, result, and proportionate conclusion.
- Every reported outcome and analysis was defined in the methods.
- Denominators, units, uncertainty, exclusions, and missingness are visible.
- The language reflects the design and limits of generalization.
Most papers end the Discussion with a concise concluding paragraph. Conclusion is commonly present, but it is not a separate letter in the IMRaD acronym unless the journal requires a distinct section.
